One of my favorite places in Italy is my local bar. Here I can check in withthe barmen and regular patrons, share the latest news and indulge in the best cappuccino on the planet. From the steamy, deep aroma of freshly ground espresso to the sweet, yeasty vapor that wafts from the heated breakfast cornetti case, I delight in the ritual of chat and sustenance that keeps me deeply rooted to my adopted community in Martina Franca, Puglia.

My favorite place so far in Italy is Umbria – whether it’s driving through the countryside to Orvieto, living in an old farmhouse near Perugia or enjoying a fabulous meal in a local Agriturismo. I plan on spending some of my retirement there!

The restaurant my friend and I ate at 3 out of 8 days when we stayed in Rome on Via Veneto. The mushroom fettuccine is still something I dream about.

One of my favourite places in Italy is sitting in Campo San Barnaba in Venice sipping a Spritz in the early evening summer sun. It’s the most relaxing place on Earth, watching the fruttivendolo selling from his boat while local kids play football in the square. Bliss!

Napoli – to wonder through the beautiful little streets where old and new meet, enjoying the picture postcard landscape of Vesuvius watching over the Bay of Naples, breathtakingly beautiful views – pure magic!

ONE of My Favorite Places in Italy is Residenza Paradiso in Trevi, Umbria. We spent 10 blissful days there taking the walking track to Trevi most days through the olive groves, relaxing by the swimming pool, watching the world out of the little viewing tower in casa del contadino and exploring neighbouring towns of Montefalco, Spello, Spoleto… and of course trying to communicate with my 20 words of Italian and her 10 words of English with the wonderful owner Emiliana!
